Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities

Art therapy offers a flexible, strengths-based approach that supports children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities by meeting each individual where they are. Through art-making, clients are given alternative ways to communicate thoughts, emotions, and sensory experiences that may be difficult to express verbally. The creative process can support emotional regulation, build self-awareness, strengthen fine and gross motor skills, and encourage social connection in a low-pressure, supportive environment. Art therapy also allows individuals to explore identity, increase autonomy, and experience success through self-directed choice and creativity.

My work in this field began as an undergraduate, where I first supported individuals with disabilities in educational and community-based settings. Since then, I have continued to work with neurodivergent individuals for many years, both as an art educator and as an art therapist. This long-term experience has shaped a practice grounded in respect, patience, and collaboration. I focus on creating inclusive, accessible spaces that honor neurodiversity, recognize individual strengths, and support growth at each person’s own pace. Art therapy becomes not about producing a finished product, but about using creativity as a meaningful tool for expression, connection, and well-being.
